The idea of James Bond being managed by an American company has caused quite a stir! Amazon’s acquisition of the beloved British Bond franchise has left many in the UK concerned about the future of 007.

After extensive negotiations between the film producers and Amazon MGM studio, which have been widely covered in the British media, the final decision was made on Thursday: the American giant will now control the fate of the world’s most famous spy.

With this change, the Broccoli family, who have long safeguarded the franchise that popularized the allure of MI6 globally, has handed over creative control to Amazon.

This development has sent shockwaves through the media in Bond’s homeland; the day after the announcement, The Independent questioned whether Amazon’s takeover meant the franchise had been “buried.” Meanwhile, The Times and The Telegraph both suggested that James Bond would “never” be the same again.

In 2022, Jeff Bezos’s company purchased the iconic MGM studio for $8.45 billion, but the Broccoli family maintained exclusive control over the James Bond brand. According to The Times, Amazon paid an additional $1 billion to producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli to gain creative rights.

Experts predict that Bond will become “more corporate,” with changes in the number of films produced, as noted by Tom Harrington from Enders Analysis, which specializes in entertainment industry insights. While Amazon’s specific plans for the franchise are still unclear, one thing is certain: “Amazon wants a return on their investment,” said Chloe Preece, a marketing professor at London’s ESCP Business School.

To justify the deal, Amazon is likely to develop “spin-offs” or “prequels” and leverage merchandising opportunities, according to Preece. However, there is a risk of over-saturating the franchise, which could dilute its appeal. It will be crucial to “stay true to the brand’s heritage” and the character created by English author Ian Fleming over seventy years ago, emphasized Mediavilla. The question remains: will 007 flourish or diminish under Amazon’s management?
