Billy Porter has stepped away from the musical after developing a severe case of sepsis. In an official statement, producers confirmed the medical situation and the show’s early closure.
“Due to a serious case of sepsis, Billy Porter must withdraw from the production. His doctors are confident that he will make a full recovery but have advised him to maintain a restful schedule.”
This serious condition happens when the body’s response to infection damages its own tissues. It requires extensive medical care and recovery time, making an ongoing Broadway run impossible.

Understudies Complete the Final Performances
With Porter’s departure, alternates Marty Lauter and David Merino will take over the Emcee role for the remaining performances. Producer Adam Speers believes they can complete the run successfully.

Both performers have been with the production since it opened in April 2024 and are well-acquainted with the role.

The revival has encountered recent financial troubles. Reports have indicated that weekly grosses fell to around $500,000, with audience capacity dropping below 70%, making the production financially unviable without its star.
This production opened on Broadway in 2024 after a successful run in the West End, featuring Eddie Redmayne before Porter took over the Emcee role in July.
