Dominique Thorne: 5 Facts About The Actress – Dominique Thorne is an American actress who belongs to a family of African ethnicity migrating from Trinidad and Tobago.

Thorne, now 25, was born in New York to parents Nerissa Guy and Navie Guy. They are immigrants who moved to the US from their home country Trinidad & Tobago. She has two brothers, Ky-Mani, 15, and Caleb, 6.

Throne made her debut in 2018 with the film If Beale Street Could Talk. She played the character of Shelia Hunt, an ill-tempered younger sister of the main character.

She was cast for the role of Judy Harmon, a member of the Black Panthers, in the film Judas and the Black Messiah.

She became a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe from the film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever where she played the Superhero, Riri Williams / Ironheart. A Disney+ TV series, Ironheart, is in post-production where she will reprise her role as the titular character.

Nerissa Guy and Navie Guy are the parents of Thorne. They immigrated to the US along with the grandmother of Thorne. She was born in Brooklyn, New York.

She is never shy about accepting the fact about her heritage. Even when growing up, she knew she was different than others but always felt a sense of pride in it.

Throne’s immediate family is residing in the US but most of her family members and relatives still live in Trinidad. Her parents have tried to retain their cultural aspects as much as possible after their immigration to the US. She has established good communication with her friends and family in Trinidad.

Thorne has visited Trinidad only once – in 2010. There she stayed with her aunt in Chaguanas. She tried to make the most of her short stay and made a lot of memories to cherish. She visited the family in Mayar, went to summer camps, and visited museums.

The things she admires the most about Trinidad culture are the sense of pride and dignity of its people and the food.

Thorne Got Invested in Acting During her High School Days

It was during her high-school years Thorne started to take acting seriously and learned different techniques.

She came to realize her talent in acting when she had her first Greek-speaking role. She played Kypros for the Orchidéa play.

Her first role was Puck, from the Mid Summer Night’s Dream. She was a Freshman at the Professional Performing Arts High School (PPAS) in Manhattan. In 2015, she was named a National YoungArts Winner for Spoken Theatre.

It was a watershed period in her life. It encouraged her to perform and act and also learn Shakespeare. The thing that inspired her the most to take acting more seriously is when she learned the fact that it gives people an opportunity to be changed and a chance to relieve their stresses.

When she thought about acting, the only thing on her mind was the Theatre and Broadway. She hadn’t considered film and TV didn’t until she was in college.

Thorne learned Greek as a Second Language In School

Thorne is good at the Greek language, which she learned as a second language in middle school.

She attended Greek Orthodox Middle School in Brooklyn, where Greek was her second language.

She said in an interview that her stage performance in a Greek drama sparked her interest in acting. She gives credit to A. Fantis Parochial School of Saints Constantine and Helen Cathedral for the exposure.

Her schooling journey was not simple. Thorne’s mother wanted her to have the best education possible. There was a lot of switching between different schools. She was uncompromising when it came to her children’s education.

Thorne attended a ‘Caribbean preschool’ in Flatbush. She then attended a series of Catholic schools and even a Greek Orthodox Middle School in Brooklyn.

AJ Crimson, a celebrity makeup artist and a beauty mogul, is a role model for Thorne.

Thorne says Crimson was the first person she met who really showed her how to carry herself once in the spaces that she had dreamt of being in.

AJ Crimson had an untimely death. On her Instagram, Thorne paid tribute to him and wrote, “I don’t have the words. Doubtful I ever will. But I miss you. I love you. I want you back. … You are too big to be a memory.”

Thorne considered her parents her inspiration. From them, she learned that she must create a life that she envisioned for herself.

Speaking to Harper’s BAZAAR she said, “I love the hustle and the skills and the mindset and the reverence for God that my parents and my family sort of naturally imbued into me. But figuring out how to navigate this world was something that they couldn’t help me with. And the first person to really help me was AJ Crimson.”

She also considers Aubrey Drake Graham a motivator. His success inspired her to follow her dreams and to give her very best in whatever she is doing.

Thorne has a University Degree

Thorne completed her graduation in May 2019 from Cornell University.

She has a bachelor’s degree in Human Development with a minor in Inequality Studies.

She said that had she not entered into acting, she would be doing something related to her study, specifically in Social and Personality Development. She is fascinated by the human bonding aspect of that field and would have continued research in that field because she feels comfortable there.

She is also an ardent human rights activist. She is a voice for racial minorities, Black people’s rights, and LGBTQ rights.
