Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff, the beloved England cricket legend, recently returned to St George’s Hospital to thank the medical team who saved his life after his horrific 2022 Top Gear crash. The emotional reunion highlighted his gratitude and the severity of his injuries, which his surgeon called “among the most complex” in his 20-year career.
Flintoff’s journey from trauma to recovery has been inspiring, and his heartfelt words to the NHS staff reveal the depth of his appreciation.

Flintoff’s Emotional Return to St George’s Hospital
Freddie Flintoff made a poignant visit to St George’s Hospital in Tooting, where he was airlifted after his near-fatal crash in December 2022. The former cricketer, dressed casually in a blue cardigan and grey trousers, embraced the staff who treated him, calling them “absolute superheroes”.
His exact words were:
“I just want to say a massive thank you to all the staff at St George’s. I came here probably the lowest I’ve ever been, in need of help, and the expertise, the love, the compassion they showed me was incredible. I’ll be eternally grateful.”

The visit was a full-circle moment for Flintoff, who had feared his face was “ripped off” in the accident.
Surgeon Reveals the Severity of Flintoff’s Injuries
Consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon Jahrad Haq, who led Flintoff’s treatment, described the injuries as some of the worst he had seen.
“A lot of injuries are managed at a more junior level before escalating, so I knew this one was serious. Of all the trauma cases I’ve seen in over 20 years, this was among the most complex.”
Flintoff suffered broken teeth, a fractured upper jaw, and lost significant portions of his upper and lower lips. The five-hour reconstructive surgery was like “putting a jigsaw puzzle back together—except the pieces weren’t there”.
Flintoff’s Wife Recalls the Harrowing Aftermath
Rachael Flintoff, Freddie’s wife, shared the emotional toll of seeing him post-accident.
“I’ve never seen someone so scared in their eyes. He just stared at me, looking to know how bad he was. I pulled myself together and told him, ‘It’s fine. You’re going to be okay.’”
She also prepared their children, saying:
“Your dad looks different now, but it’s going to get better. I don’t want you to look shocked because that’s going to knock him.”
The family’s resilience played a key role in Flintoff’s recovery.
Cricket Became Flintoff’s Lifeline
After months of isolation, Flintoff returned to cricket, coaching England’s Lions and the Northern Superchargers. His wife Rachael said:
“When Andrew needed it most, cricket was there for him. It sounds over the top, but I do think cricket saved him. It gave him a reason for being again.”
His gradual return to the public eye, including TV appearances and coaching roles, has shown his determination to move forward.
