Sam Brown sustained third-degree burns to 30% of his body, mostly in areas where his individual body armor did not protect him. He also lost his left index finger in the accident.
Brown was evacuated and brought to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. It is a level I trauma center and home to the Army Burn Center.
The accident took place in 2018 when he was conducting route security in Kandahar, Afghanistan. He and his soldiers began to receive indirect fire, which quickly changed to direct fire from various directions.
Brown entered an enemy engagement area while attempting to assist the men in the M1151 humvees in front of him. He was hit by an improvised explosive device while there.
