By happenstance, the five-year-old Thorpe followed his older sister Christina into the pool after Christina suggested that he learn to swim to strengthen a fractured wrist. Ironically, the swimmer’s intolerance to chlorine caused him to stop swimming at a young age.

The youngest male representative for Australia at the time was 14-year-old, Ian Thorpe. Ian became the youngest-ever individual male World Champion when he won the 400-meter freestyle at the 1998 Perth World Championships.

Up to his break following the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, he began to win at every Olympic, World, Commonwealth, and Pan Pacific Swimming Championship.

In the 2001 World Aquatics Championships, he won six gold medals. 

He only earned the moniker “Thorpedo” because of his incredibly fast swimming.

In November 2006, Ian Thorpe declared his retirement from the world of competitive swimming. He, however, briefly returned in 2011 and 2012.

Thorpe has won a total of eleven gold medals at the World Championships, which ranks him seventh among all male swimmers in terms of gold medal wins.
