Before Sarah and Peter embarked on their Outback adventure, she claimed to have met him numerous times in secret for sex.

Joanne claimed, “I did love Pete with all of my heart, and when that happened, I overstepped the boundaries of friendship,” when asked about the affair outside of court in 2005.

But it made me love Pete more and appreciate what we already had.

She did not, however, mention whether she would have told Nick, whom she met through friends, about her affair with him in 2001.

Upon being questioned, she responded, “That was one thing I struggled with. I don’t know the answer, and the thing is, all I can say is that it was taken away from me, too, wasn’t it?

“All I wanted was Pete to be here so I could…well, I wanted him to be here more than anything,” the speaker said.

In a conversation to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Falconio’s disappearance, Lees revealed that in the years after the assault, she studied sociology at Sheffield College and worked as both a travel agent and a social worker. Now Joanne Lees is working in social services.

In 2017, she acknowledged having a half-sister named Jess from Sydney who lives in Australia. After splitting from Lees’ mother while she was a little child, Lees’ Australian estranged father had Jess from a previous relationship. Lees has been attempting to obtain Australian citizenship closer to her since the two split up.

It’s almost like a mirror, she said in an interview with The Daily Telegraph in Australia. We immediately became aware of one another. It was fantastic.

“I feel much less alone in the world,” she continued.

She recently spoke about the homicide in more detail on 9’s 60 Minutes, saying: “Pete lost his life that night, but I lost mine too.” She returned to the murder scene to understand the “attacker’s” motivation, saying it was “because I adore Pete.”

Who Killed Peter Falconio?

Joanne and Peter, who was 28 then, traveled around Australia in their VW Kombi campervan when tragedy struck on July 14, 2001.

As they traveled up to Alice Springs in the north, Bradley Murdoch, who had been following them in a four-by-four, ambushed them, according to Joanne.

He said he had an issue with the exhaust, but when Peter tried to help, the stranger shot him.

Joanne said that after being drugged and raped, Murdoch had kidnapped her.

She claimed that Murdoch grabbed her out of the car, tossed her into his instead and that she bit and scratched him in the process.

Later, she escaped his grasp by hurling herself out of the automobile and vanishing into the night.

Up to five hours were spent by Joanne hiding in the underbrush before she emerged to wave down a passing lorry.

The first 11 years of Lees’ life were spent with her mother Jenny after her birth on September 25, 1973. The new family of four lived in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England, after her mother’s second marriage to Vincent, who was previously married and had a son by the name of Sam.

She worked as a bartender and a bacon packer during her time in high school and then during her studies before landing a position at her neighborhood Thomas Cook travel agency.

In 1996, Lees and Falconio initially met in a Huddersfield nightclub. The following year, they moved in together in Brighton, England, where Falconio was attending Brighton University.

The pair then went on brief vacations to Italy, Greece, and Jamaica until she switched her employment to a nearby Cook agency.

They had arrived in Sydney on a working vacation visa on January 16, 2001, and after doing some job searching, Lees eventually found employment at the Dymocks bookstore on George Street.

After spending five months enjoying Sydney’s nightlife, Falconio bought a car to prepare for the couple’s upcoming road trip from Sydney to Melbourne, Adelaide, Darwin, and Brisbane.
