When he was four years old, he started playing the piano but soon moved to his father’s Hammond B-3 because he liked the sound of it better than the contemporary synthesizers, which had replaced the piano as the instrument of choice.

Around age six, he started sitting in at his father’s club performances; by age 10, he was playing paid gigs on the weekends and filling in with musicians like Groove Holmes and Jack McDuff.
