Kaitlyn Dever, who portrays Abby, the antagonist in the upcoming second season of The Last of Us, has spoken out about the significant backlash her character has faced.

This controversy traces back to The Last of Us Part II’s release in June 2020, when Abby’s actions against Joel ignited considerable outrage among gamers.

Dever admitted that it’s tough to overlook online reactions, saying,

“It’s hard not to see those things on the internet. It’s hard not to stop myself from looking at it every once in a while, especially going into this, for sure.”

Despite these hurdles, Dever’s main goal is to work closely with showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann to deliver a powerful performance. She highlighted how crucial it is to get a grip on Abby’s emotional journey, which includes feelings of anger, frustration, and grief. The new season, set five years after the first, will follow Abby as she seeks out Joel and Ellie, who are now living in Jackson, Wyoming.

The backlash has been so intense that Dever has had to boost her personal security, as noted by her co-star Isabela Merced. This kind of hostility is unfortunately not new; Laura Bailey, who voiced Abby in the game, received similar threats, including death threats targeted at her newborn.

Dever is committed to honoring Abby by infusing her portrayal with depth and authenticity. She shared her hope to “do this character justice and make the fans proud by bringing her to life in this kind of way.” The second season of The Last of Us is set to premiere on April 13, and anticipation is high to see how Dever will tackle the complex and polarizing role of Abby.
