As a free agent, Subban sat out the pandemic-shortened 2020–21 season before resuming his career on August 12, 2021, when he signed a one-year AHL deal with the Hershey Bears, the Washington Capitals’ primary affiliate.

P.K. Subban had hoped to continue playing hockey, but at 33 years old and 13 seasons in the NHL, he has decided to stop.

When Subban announced his retirement on social media on Tuesday morning, he said that he never looked at himself or ever felt like “simply a hockey player.”

He always saw himself as a regular guy who also played hockey. With that viewpoint, he was able to appreciate each shift as though it were his last, rejoice in every goal with emotion, and play each game as though someone had paid to watch him play who had never done so before.

Subban played his final game with the New Jersey Devils on April 29. He concluded the season with totals of 5-17-22 in 77 games, a minus-8 rating, and an average of 18:18 of ice time.

It was the final year of Subban’s eight-year, $72 million contract, which he signed in 2014 while playing for the Canadiens, who had taken him 43rd overall in the second round of the NHL Draft in 2007.

Subban played for the Canadiens for seven seasons and earned the Norris Trophy as the league’s best defenseman in 2012–13 after scoring 11–27–38 points in 42 games and accruing a plus–12 rating in a season that was cut short by the lockout.

In 834 regular-season games with the Canadiens, Nashville Predators, and Devils, he records 115-352-476 totals for his career.
