United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio and billionaire White House adviser Elon Musk reportedly had a disagreement during a Cabinet meeting, with President Donald Trump observing the extent of staff reductions Rubio has implemented.
The situation reportedly escalated when Trump informed his Cabinet members that they, not Musk, hold the authority over staffing and policy decisions within their agencies.
According to The New York Times, Musk, tasked by Trump with streamlining the federal bureaucracy, accused Rubio of not having terminated any employees and resisting Musk’s efforts for significant staff cuts.
In response, Rubio pointed out that at least 1,500 State Department employees had opted for early retirement buyouts.
Rubio also sarcastically questioned whether Musk expected him to rehire those individuals just to stage another round of firings.
The meeting was reportedly called in response to concerns from agency heads about Musk’s blunt approach, which has drawn criticism from top White House officials, including chief of staff Susie Wiles.

Meanwhile, President Trump dismissed the notion of a clash when questioned about it during a press session in the Oval Office.
“There was no clash; I was present. You’re just trying to stir up trouble. Elon and Marco get along very well, and they’re both doing an excellent job. Marco has been outstanding as Secretary of State, and Elon is a remarkable individual who has performed exceptionally,”
he stated in response to a reporter’s inquiry about the incident.
