Russell was the first black player to reach superstar status in the NBA and played alongside Earl Lloyd, Chuck Cooper, and Sweetwater Clifton were black pioneers. He also spent three seasons (1966–1969) as a player-coach for the Celtics, making history by becoming the first black professional sports coach in North America and the first to take home a championship.

In 1975, Russell received a nomination for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2007, the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006, and the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2007.

Bill Russell’s Family Heartbroken After His Death

Charles Russell and Katie Russell welcomed Bill Russell into the world on February 12, 1934, in West Monroe, Louisiana. Monroe, which at the time was highly segregated like practically all Southern towns and cities, passed away on July 31 and devastated his family.

The Russells encountered racism regularly. A petrol station once refused to serve Russell’s father until the personnel met all the white customers first. The attendant discharged a shotgun in his face and told him to stay and wait for his turn when he tried to leave and go to another station.

Another time, a white policeman stopped Russell’s mother as she was walking outside in a fancy dress. She was instructed to go home and take off the dress, which he characterized as belonging to a white woman.

The Second Great Migration started during World War II as several black people moved to the West searching for employment. Russell’s father relocated the family from Louisiana to Oakland, California, when Russell was eight years old. They became impoverished there, and Russell spent his boyhood in several public housing projects.
