Mona started her acting career on stage, playing Lady Macbeth in an all-Black ensemble and starring in a number of plays by aspiring Black playwrights including Sweet Talk & Josephine House.

Additionally, she worked on stage for two years with The Crucible, Peer Gynt, and Fuente Ovejuna for the Royal National Theatre. Before switching to EastEnders, she first worked on the television shows The Sweeney, Juliet Bravo, & Coronation Street.

Along with Holby City, she has appeared in shows including Death in Paradise, Doctor Who, The Bill, and Last of the Mohicans. She originated the character of Susu in Desmond’s cast and reprised it in the Porkpie spin-off of the series. On BBC’s The Archers, the late celebrity played Mabel Thompson, which was broadcast on television.

Mavis Chin gave birth to Hammond on January 1st, 1931 in Tweeside, Clarendon Parish. Her mother was Jamaican, while her father was Chinese.

On a Jamaican Scholarship, she went to the UK in 1959 where she worked for Norman & Dawbarn Architects. She spent two years doing evening sessions at the City Literary Institute in London before receiving a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), where she received her degree in 1964.

Her Chinese father & Jamaican mother gave Mona the name Mavis Chin. In 2005, she received an OBE in recognition of her contributions to the theater. For her efforts to support Black British actresses, she also received the Women of the World Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.

Hammond received the Women of the World Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018 in recognition of her lengthy and illustrious career in theater and for supporting Black British artists with Talawa Theatre Company. The highest UK honor given by the Screen Nation Film & Television Awards, the Edric Connor Inspiration Award, was given to Hammond in 2006.
