The incident occurred while he was covering the 2022 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal match between Argentina and Netherlands on December 9, 2022.
Grant’s brother, Eric Wahl, says he suspects foul play in the Journalist’s passing.
He introduced himself on Instagram on Friday, stating that he was Eric Wahl from Seattle, Washington, and the brother of Grant Wahl.
Eric further shared his homosexuality and that it was the reason that Grant wore the rainbow shirt to the World Cup.
He claimed his brother was healthy and received death threats following the rainbow shirt incident.
Eric believes that his brother was killed, and “I just beg for any help,” he wrote.
U.S. Soccer released a statement via Twitter sending condolences to Wahl’s family and mourning his loss.
Initial reports suggest Grant may have had a heart attack, but the official cause of death is yet to be known.
On his latest podcast, Fútbol with Grant Wahl, Grant said he had bronchitis.

Wahl was married to Celine Gounder (m. 2001). They were college sweethearts who met at Princeton University and were together for 25 years.
Celine is a medical doctor, Journalist, and professor specializing in infectious diseases and global health.
