Harrison Birtwistle, one of the most well-known composers in the United Kingdom, died at 87.

Boosey & Hawkes, Birtwistle’s publisher, confirmed his death on Monday at his home in Mere, southwest England.

Even though there is no mention of his cause of death, his followers believe he died of a stroke.

In the northern English town of Accrington, Birtwistle began his musical career as a clarinetist, where he was born in 1934.

He attended the Royal Manchester College of Music to study clarinet and composition. He met fellow composers Peter Maxwell Davies and Alexander Goehr, pianist John Ogdon and conductor and trumpeter Elgar Howarth, who formed the Manchester School.

Many famous composers, including Daniel Barenboim, Simon Rattle, Christoph von Dohnányi, Oliver Knussen, and performers such as violinist Christian Tetzlaff and pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, championed his work, which premiered his Responses for piano and orchestra in 2014.
