Chelsea Lucas was appointed head volleyball coach at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in February 2019. In the spring of 2021, Lucas assisted the Lady Lions in reaching their first SWAC Championship game in the history of the program since joining the staff in 2019.
Lucas, who anchored Grambling State’s defense during its title run, was named the SWAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2006. Moreover, she was appointed club director of the Louisiana Southern Swing Volleyball Club in 2011.
In her hometown of Houma, Louisiana, Lucas made her coaching debut in 2007 as an assistant coach at Terrebonne High School and head coach of the Bayou Bandits club team. In 2009, she was appointed head volleyball coach at Houma Junior High School, and in 2011, she accepted a similar position at Riverside Academy.

Chelsey Lucas, the Grambling State volleyball coach, was fired for her decision to cut volleyball players on scholarship. After she was hired as a new coach, she started making changes within the team which made a holistic impact on the team.
The action was taken two months after Rick Gallot, the president of Grambling College, revealed that the university had hired a law firm to look into the volleyball team. In a statement, Lucas said that she was let go “without notice” and that the school gave no explanation for its decision.
When Grambling State hired Chelsey as its volleyball coach in February, she instantly fired the whole squad of 19 players. Many players were shocked when Lucas, less than two months into her new position, notified the 12 returning scholarship players that she would not be renewing their scholarships for the fall 2022 season.
According to the university, a volleyball program internal investigation led to the termination. The 12 scholarship players who were on the squad when Lucas was fired will remain in their current status at least through the upcoming season, according to athletic director Trayvean Scott.
More than 3,000 people have signed a petition criticizing the coach’s management of the team in response to the roster instability that followed Lucas’ employment at Grambling. The university is now conducting a nationwide search for a new coach.

Chelsey Lucas was under allegations of pulling numerous scholarships from incumbent players within the team. However, she has not taken any action to bring back any of the players that were fired since Lucas took over in February.
Lucas came under fire for reportedly purging the entire roster in the offseason. In April, GSU athletics’ director of communications, Brian Howard, told KSLA that Lucas would be changing the roster, but he did not know how many changes there would be.
After she made the change the students abruptly lost their scholarships. However, they will now be able to retain them. According to the players, on April 4, the coach scheduled individual meetings with each player and informed them that their scholarships would not be renewed. But only a few months later, the program made the decision to fire her after looking into the matter.
