According to a statement, on Sunday, Dec. 11, at 7:53 p.m., deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Sherwood Police Department officers went to a home on SW 207th Avenue and Pacific Highway for a report of a shooting.

Investigators learned that 36-year-old Cody Buyas was allegedly stalking his ex-girlfriend and went to her home. Her family reported learned that he was at her residence and “confronted him.”

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said Buyas “displayed a weapon, and a family member fired multiple shots.”

He was transported to a nearby hospital but died from his wounds early Dec. 12.

The woman’s family is reportedly cooperating with investigators. The Sheriff’s Office said neither deputies nor officers fired weapons while responding to the incident, and no arrests have been made.On Monday night, KATU spoke to Dr. Kathie Mathis, a domestic violence expert, who said stalking happens more often than people think “because stalking is one of those crimes where law enforcement has a hard time doing anything, because it’s one person’s word against another person’s word.”

A person who would stalk somebody may appear normal on the outside, but “they’re not normal at all,” she said. “When that person tries to leave them, their whole mindset is, if I can’t have you, nobody can. And don’t you try to test me.”

And she said even though physically the ex-girlfriend may be fine, “emotionally, psychologically, probably none of them are fine. There might be sleepless nights, nightmares, night terrors.”

Mathis said if you or someone you know is being stalked, there are ways you can protect yourself and heal.
