The FBI is reportedly en route to Lima, Peru, to extradite Natalee Holloway’s suspected killer, Joran van der Sloot, so he can face federal charges in the U.S. for extorting Holloway’s family.

Peru’s Interpol chief, Colonel Carlos López Aeda, told Fox News that van der Sloot will be flown to the United States on Thursday. Van der Sloot, who is facing charges in Alabama, is currently imprisoned in Peru for an unrelated murder.

Van der Sloot’s attorney, Maximo Altez, also told Fox that he has petitioned the Peruvian government to stop his client’s extradition.

A federal affidavit stated that van der Sloot admitted to pushing Holloway to the ground in Aruba when she tried to leave him, which led to her hitting her head and dying.

Van der Sloot allegedly claimed that his father, who died in 2010, helped bury Holloway’s body. Fox News reported that Van der Sloot led Holloway’s family’s lawyer to a spot where her body was not located — only to claim he lied about the location after the lawyer left Aruba.

Van der Sloot, a Dutch national, was indicted in Alabama in 2010 for wire fraud. He was reportedly paid $25,000 for information about Holloway’s whereabouts and had demanded $225,000 more. Afterward, he allegedly provided a link to a website that he claimed detailed where Holloway’s remains were buried, but that was not the case.

In 2012, van der Sloot was sentenced to 28 years for Stephany Flores’ slaying — which he said occurred after she learned of his connection to Holloway’s presumed murder.

Though Holloway was legally declared dead in 2012, her remains have not been found.
