Police release names of 11 indicted on charges in the hazing death of VCU student – Eleven people have been charged in connection to the hazing death of VCU student Adam Oakes.

According to the Richmond Police Department, eight of those people have been arrested but all 11 face charges in the death. The three others indicted have not yet been arrested, but police expect them to turn themselves in within the coming days.

The arrests come after seven months of investigation into Oak’s death. Oaks cousin Courtney White believes she and her family will finally get the answers they’ve been pleading for.

“When we got the first call that people were being arrested we cried it was like that first glimmer of hope in seven months,” said White. “It was bittersweet we cried I mean it was just so wonderful to hear that something was being done.”

    The following have been arrested:

    • Benjamin J. Corado (male, 19) – Charges: Unlawful Hazing of Student, Purchase, giving alcohol to a minor
    • Quinn A. Kuby (male, 22) – Charges: Unlawful Hazing of Student, Purchase, giving alcohol to a minor
    • Riley K. McDaniel (male, 21) – Charge: Unlawful Hazing of Student
    • Alessandro Medina-Villanueva (male, 21) – Charge: Unlawful Hazing of Student
    • Jason B. Mulgrew (male, 21) – Charge: Unlawful Hazing of Student
    • Christian G. Rohrbach (male, 22) – Charge: Unlawful Hazing of Student
    • Colin G. Tran (male, 20) – Charges: Unlawful Hazing of Student, Purchase, giving alcohol to a minor
    • Enayat W. Sheikhzad (male, 22) – Charge: Unlawful Hazing of Student

“These arrests signify that you’re not going to get away with hazing in the state of Virginia, but also that Adam didn’t die, and no one is held accountable for what happened to him,” said White.

Oakes was found dead in an off-campus house on West Clay Street early Saturday, Feb. 27. His family believes Oakes was hazed during a party on Friday night after he accepted a bid to join Delta Chi.

On May 25, the medical examiner ruled the cause of death ethanol toxicity.

Back in June Delta Chi Fraternity was officially banned from VCU’s campus,

Last month, VCU also notified its students that it will not allow Greek organizations to bring on new members for the upcoming school year. Alcohol has also been prohibited for official student organization functions for all undergraduate students. White believes these reforms could save another life.

“If other universities don’t have something in place, take VCU as the example and start doing it now before one of your students dies because of hazing,” said White.

In the meantime, White and her family say they are waiting for their day in court and some semblance of justice for Oakes’s death.

“The question that I still have is what happened,” said White. “I know the gist of what happened that evening, but I’d love to hear it from somebody that can tell me piece by piece everything that my cousin went through that night because right now the unknowing is just as agonizing as the pain of his death.”

At this time the remaining three individuals have not been arrested. Police believe that the remaining three individuals are expected to turn themselves in in the coming days.

VCU student from Loudoun County dies in fraternity hazing incident, family says

A Virginia Commonwealth University student from Loudoun County died this weekend in what his family described as a hazing incident, Richmond.com reports.

Adam Oakes was found unresponsive Saturday morning at a house off-campus in Richmond after rush events at the fraternity, his cousin said. The events involved alcohol and Oakes may have hit his head after being blindfolded, she said.

The fraternity involved, Delta Chi, has been suspended by the university and the fraternity’s national office. VCU officials declined to say if Oakes was a member.

VCU mourns the death of student Adam Oakes.

A cause of death has not been determined, police said.

A GoFundMe for Oakes family described him as “the happiest, most joyful guy that everyone wanted to be around. His contentment was infectious. His laugh was one no one will ever forget and it’s one I wish I could hear just one more time.”
