Since his release, the author has published two books about his experiences: trial, time in jail, and subsequent life as a free man.
‘Behind the Staircase’ and ‘Beyond the Staircase’ are the titles of the two pieces. Michael Peterson now contributes all of the revenues from his book to charity and lives in a humble and secluded apartment on the ground floor with no stairs in North Carolina.

Michael then entered an Alford plea, which is a guilty plea that allows the defendant to preserve their innocence because it is more of a surrender to the allegations owing to overwhelming evidence. He was sentenced to the time he had already served in jail when he pled guilty to the offense in 2017.
Kathleen’s daughter Caitlin filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Michael for $25 million.

Clayton Peterson is Michael Peterson’s oldest son from his first marriage to Patricia Sue, an elementary school teacher at Gräfenhausen’s Rhein-Main Air Base.
However, Clayton and his younger brother Todd moved back in with their mother after Michael Peterson and Patricia Sue split in 1985. They subsequently moved to Durham, North Carolina, to live with their father and spend the rest of their childhood and teenage years there.
