Kevin Feige had a unique experience with Hugh Jackman before he became Wolverine. Way back in 2000, the team was searching for the right actor to play the iconic X-Men character. They initially thought Hugh was too tall for the role. But when they struggled to find someone else, they decided to give him a chance.
Kevin, who worked as an assistant at the time, remembers how eager they were to find their Wolverine. “We were in a rush to cast the part,” he said.
“My boss really wanted to try out this Australian guy, even though he had been rejected earlier for being too tall. In the comics, Wolverine is sometimes called a ‘little fireplug’ because he’s short. But we were getting desperate.”
Despite concerns over Hugh’s height, Kevin arranged for him to audition. However, the reading didn’t go well. Afterwards, Kevin took Hugh out to dinner before driving him to the airport. “It was the kind thing to do,” Kevin recalled. “I didn’t think I’d ever see him again after that.”
Hugh also believed he had lost the role. But their paths crossed again years later when Marvel announced the movie “Deadpool & Wolverine” in 2023. This reunited Hugh with Kevin and the Marvel team. “It’s amazing that after 25 years, Hugh is now our Wolverine,” Kevin said.
“Having the X-Men characters together with Deadpool under one roof is incredible.”
What seemed like a disappointing audition turned into a legendary casting that spanned over two decades. Kevin’s small gesture of kindness left a lasting impact, showing how a little empathy can go a long way in the entertainment industry.
At first, Kevin Feige advised Hugh Jackman not to play Wolverine again. He praised Jackman’s excellent work as Wolverine in “Logan”. Feige wanted to keep the impact of that movie.
To solve this issue, Feige said the Wolverine in “Deadpool & Wolverine” is from a different timeline. This way, Jackman can show new sides of the character without changing what happened in “Logan”.
In the new movie, we will see Wolverine in ways we haven’t seen before. Feige says there will be a twist involving the TVA. Kevin McFayden’s Paradox TVA agent may not be as nice as we first think.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” comes out on July 26. Many people are excited to see it after Marvel’s rough 2023. They are looking forward to Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine and the unique story.
