A look at “Josh Windass takes aim at Barnsley boss” Sheffield Wednesday will be playing in the Championship next season as Josh Windass grabbed the winner in their League One play-off final against local rivals Barnsley
Wembley hero Josh Windass took a swipe at Barnsley boss Michael Duff after firing Sheffield Wednesday back into the Championship. The former Glasgow Rangers forward scored with the last action of extra time, nodding home Lee Gregory’s cross to help the Owls secure promotion.
Windass, the son of Hull City legend Dean, was part of the Wednesday side who lost 4-0 to Peterborough United in the semi-finals of the end-of-season extravaganza. Speaking after their South Yorkshire derby win, Windass claimed he heard Barnsley boss Duff had left the tie at the Weston Homes Stadium early.
Windass told Sky Sports: “I heard their manager left our game against Peterborough because he said we were out. So, unlucky.”

The 29-year-old pulled no punches over the quality of the final as the Owls struggled to break down 10-man Barnsley. Reds midfielder Adam Phillips was sent off early in the second half after a poor challenge on Lee Gregory but Duff’s team dug deep and produced a valiant performance.
But all their good work was undone at the death as Windass bagged a dramatic winner. “Probably the worst standard of game that you’ll ever watch,” Windass admitted. “The standard from both teams was shocking to be honest, no real quality and luckily we got the winning goal.”
Wednesday’s players and coaching staff celebrated wildly in front of 44,000 travelling fans. “It’s one of the fan bases in the country. I’ve played for a couple of big clubs but look at this, it’s unbelievable,” said Windass.
“We’ve been good on the pitch this year. The club’s got a lot of work to do to catch up with the other clubs off the pitch, but hopefully we can do that and start being the giant club that we are.”
