There has been chaos on the M62 this morning after a crash involving several vehicles saw lanes closed and left traffic queuing for miles.
National Highways Yorkshire reported earlier this afternoon around midday that the M62 Eastbound was closed at J26 due to the crash, with miles of congestion on approach. The queues only grew from there, with Inrix reporting it reached 11 miles at one point.
Traffic had to be cut down to one lane and diverted via exit and entry slip roads. Over an hour later, the junction was still closed, with National Highways reporting an hour-long delay on approach.

BBC Leeds reporter Charles Heslett reported that the crash had involved a van and two cars, and said one car’s back end had been ‘caved in’.
Drivers stuck in the standstill traffic as temperatures rise above 20 degrees took to social media as they complained they’d been sat for hours on the motorway.

@LesShameV1 tweeted: “took me 3.5h to do a 1h50m run, took a massive detour round west Yorkshire to avoid surround roads, m62 was a total car park from J23”

Pictures showed several drivers out of their cars while they were at standstill. The traffic was so bad, that one man even exited the car to walk his dog along the motorway.

@realtrumanshow tweeted: “the joys of the M62, shut eastbound before jct26 for some reason #m62 was tempted to dive into hartshead and up the service road to miss the roadworks and 50mph avg speed cameras that are currently causing chaos”
All lanes have now been reopened, but National Highways has warned around six miles on congestion remain and there are still 30 minutes worth of delays on approach.
Inrix, our traffic management system, now says: “Queueing traffic due to earlier accident on M62 Eastbound at J26 M606 (Chain Bar). All lanes have been re-opened. The road was closed within the junction at around 12:20 until around 14:30.”
