Girls Aloud have revealed Hugh Grant’s iconic dancing scene in Love Actually ‘saved them’ after fears they would be dropped by record label.

The band – Cheryl Tweedy, Nadine Coyle, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh – appeared on Wednesday’s This Morning after confirming their eagerly-anticipated reunion.

Speaking in an interview with Alison Hammond, the group reflected on their career ahead of their upcoming tour.

Nicola explained how the 2003 Christmas romantic comedy film provided a ‘turning point’ for them when their cover of Jump was featured on the British soundtrack.

The famous scene saw Hugh as PM dancing around 10 Downing Street to The Pointer Sisters’ original version of the song before realising someone was watching him and quickly stopping.

Girl Aloud starred in both the films end credits and the soundtrack, peaking at number two on the UK Singles Chart, with the accompanying music video featuring scenes from the film.

Nicola said: ‘It was a turning point. We were actually gonna be dropped before Jump by the label.

‘The songs had gone from 1 to 2 to 3, and it was a massive success and saved us.’

The band are planning to hit the road in May and June 2024 as they mark 21 years since they and the late Sarah Harding won Popstars: The Rivals.

Elsewhere in the interview, the band spoke about their upcoming tour, and how they plan to ‘celebrate’ their late friend.

Nicola continued: ‘We are gonna work really hard in making those moments of Sarah so magical which make the fans feel so included and give everyone that moment where she can be massively celebrated.

‘What we want to do is captured that kind of nostalgia that we created with her as a five over the years,’ Kimberley added.

‘We have old songs. All the hits Alison we cannot leave anything out.’

Cheryl revealed they had been discussing the plans for some time but put the idea on ice when Sarah – who died in September 2021 – was diagnosed with cancer.

She said in a statement: ‘We all started talking about the possibility of doing something to celebrate Girls Aloud’s 20-year anniversary a few years ago. The anniversary seemed like an obvious thing that we would celebrate.

‘But when Sarah fell ill all priorities changed. She passed away a year before the anniversary and it just didn’t feel right, it felt too soon.’
