The finer details of Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin suit get a proper explanation in newly revealed Spider-Man: No Way Home concept art.
Spider-Man: No Way Home concept art explains the finer details of Green Goblin’s new suit. In December, the MCU’s third solo film involving Tom Holland’s Spider-Man arrived in theaters and effectively turned the franchise – and the box office – upside down. Spider-Man: No Way Home has swung itself to $1.89 billion worldwide since its debut, and even though it didn’t receive any Oscar nominations outside of visual effects, it has been warmly received by fans and critics. A Spider-Man 4 is in early development, with Holland expected to pick up from where No Way Home left off.
One of the reasons the movie has been such a success is its multiversal premise. A spell from Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) goes horribly awry and opens up the door for people from other universes to enter the MCU. That means characters from pre-MCU Spider-Man franchises get to interact with Holland’s version of the character. Much of the buzz lately has been around the reappearance of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, but fans were also thrilled to see villains like Green Goblin. Willem Dafoe returned for the first time since Sam Raimi’s trilogy, and he received immense praise for his fractured Norman Osborn.
Unsurprisingly, Green Goblin is sporting a new suit for Spider-Man: No Way Home. It’s filled with fascinating details, and now concept artist Josh Nizzi has offered some insight into the costume. Though some of Nizzi’s ideas didn’t quite make it into No Way Home, his explanations for certain elements go a long way in detailing the new Green Goblin’s mindset. For example, Nizzi revealed the torn-up hoodie Norman grabs from the shelter is meant to resemble the hood and cape from the comics, and that he began using parts of his gilder to reinforce the suit. Dafoe’s latest outing as the Green Goblin in Spider-Man: No Way Home gives audiences the best of both worlds with him. There are scenes with the sane, brilliant version of Norman Osborn, but the deranged Goblin still lingers inside and comes out during a pivotal moment. With one singular action, Dafoe’s Green Goblin cements himself as one of the MCU’s best villains – an impressive feat considering how he was first established outside of the franchise. The No Way Home concept art just further shows how much thought and care was put into bringing him back.
Whether Green Goblin will ever return remains to be seen, though as things stand now, it isn’t super likely. He returns to his proper universe at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, and only another multiversal crisis would be able to bring him back. At the same time, many fans are currently calling for Raimi to make a proper Spider-Man 4 with Maguire back in the suit. A film like that would allow Dafoe another chance at the villain. Even if that never happens, though, he has definitely made the most of the part, and he has given himself a place in Marvel history. That’s still pretty awesome for Spider-Man’s first-ever big screen villain.
