Crisis club Marseille have officially terminated the contract of manager Andre Villas-Boas, replacing him with ex-Chile and Argentina boss Jorge Sampaoli.

Villas-Boas had been suspended by the Ligue 1 side since last month after speaking out publicly against the club signing Olivier Ntcham on transfer deadline day and spectacularly offering to resign in disagreement with the ‘sporting policy’ at a press conference.

That suspension has now led to the 43-year-old’s contract being terminated on Tuesday.

Marseille said there was a mutual agreement from both parties to end the contract early and part company.

The French side ‘thanked Villas-Boas for his contribution’ over the 19 months he was in charge and he led them impressively to a second place finish last season.

But he endured a nightmare campaign this term and was left out in the cold by Marseille after his public outburst with his team in ninth position.

They had also been eliminated from the Champions League and the heavily supported French side decided to make a change.

Sampaoli, 60, comes in to take the hotseat for the 10-time French champions.

And the Argentine arrives with the team in a far better place after a positive run of recent form under interim coach Nasser Larguet.

The Moroccan has led the team to just one defeat in their last seven games and that came against champions PSG.

He will continue to take charge for the next week as Sampaoli has been forced to isolate after arriving in Paris from Brazil.
