In response to an insensitive joke Tommy Tiernan made during a recent performance, the taxi business FreeNow has terminated its sponsorship agreement with RTÉ for The Tommy Tiernan Show.

He delivered a joke that his fellow RTÉ presenter Emer O’Neill found disrespectful and racist, so she left one of the comedian’s Vicar Street performances.

The sponsor of the comedian’s Saturday night program on RTÉ, FreeNow, has now replied to the joke, which referred to taxi drivers in Dublin Zoo.

FreeNow said it terminated a sizable sponsorship deal with the Actor and comedian’s RTÉ show because it was “disappointed with the sentiments made during his Vicar Street event against taxi drivers.” The Company made the announcement yesterday.

Tommy also released a statement about the event, which Claire Byrne read aloud on RTÉ Radio 1 earlier this week.

It reads, “Tommy told a joke on stage as part of his stand-up routine on Friday, January 6th.”

He apologized openly on stage the following night and every night since, repeating his apology and immediately pulling the joke from the show.

Tommy also sent an email and phone apology to the person who made the joke.
