He was an athlete at McClymonds (he played against future NFL champion Marshawn Lynch) and a self-described geek who adored chess. Similarly, he graduated from Yale with a Master of Fine Arts degree and worked as a stage actor.

The actor attended theatrical class at the University of California, Berkeley, as a member of Alpha Phi Alpha. That is where he competed as a hurdler for the California Golden Bears and the class helped him overcome his stutter.

Additionally, he earned a degree in architecture before working as a city planner in San Francisco. Later on, after losing his job, he took advantage of the opportunity to apply to drama schools, and he was accepted by several reputed Universities including Yale School of Drama.

Explaining that his father grew up and died with a desire to know where his father’s father came from and about his background. 

His father was of West Indian descent, although the country of origin is unknown.
