Numan’s journey into parenthood began when he was 45 years old, welcoming his eldest daughter Raven with his wife Gemma O’Neill. Initially, he believed parenthood would be straightforward, but reality proved to be far more challenging than he anticipated.
“I was 45 when I first became a father,” Numan explained. “I thought I was ready, that I had everything worked out. I couldn’t have been more wrong. It’s the most difficult thing I’ve ever done.”
He emphasized that parenthood is an unpredictable experience, stating,
“Parenthood is a moving-goalposts situation to the extreme, and each of my three daughters has moved the goalposts!”
Numan’s family planning process was not without its challenges. The couple faced difficulties conceiving naturally due to unexplained infertility, leading them to pursue IVF treatment. Their journey was marred by heartbreak, including the loss of Raven’s twin sibling during pregnancy.
“We were told we couldn’t have children naturally because we had some unexplained infertility, so we went down the IVF route,”
Numan revealed.
“Gemma got pregnant first time and we couldn’t believe our luck, but she miscarried at three months, which was horrible. We tried again many times without success, but then Raven came along (though her twin died), followed by Persia and Echo.”
Despite the initial struggles, Numan expressed his dedication to being a good parent. All three of his daughters still live at home with their parents, which Numan finds satisfying. He stated,
“Have I been a good dad? I hope so. Everyone still lives at home … which is nice, I want to hang on to them. They’re important to me; I want to do right by them.”
Numan also shared that he takes his mistakes seriously and often worries about the impact of his words on his children. Fortunately, his eldest daughter Raven hasn’t reported any lasting damage from his occasional angry outbursts.
