Shaun Shiller Fequiere (August 10, 1966 – December 18, 2021), known by his stage name Kangol Kid, was an American hip hop producer, songwriter, breakdancer, and emcee. Kangol is best known as a member of the old-school hip hop group UTFO.

Kangol Kid was the first hip-hop artist to endorse a product through his official sponsorship with Kangol headwear. His signature hat has been inducted into the Collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Kangol Kid is considered to be one of the “pioneers of hip-hop.

Kangol Kid was originally a breakdancer along with his dance partner, Doctor Ice. In 1984, UTFO became one of the most popular rap and breakdance acts in the country on the strength of their breakout single, “Roxanne, Roxanne.”[

During the mid-1980s, as “Roxanne, Roxanne” gained popularity and chart position, UTFO was voted best rap group, at the 1988 Urban Music Awards, had featured spots on Don Cornelius‘ Soul TrainThe Phil Donahue Show, and performed live for actors such as Dustin Hoffman, and Tony Danza. UTFO was the first rap group to perform at Harlem’s Apollo Theater as they opened for Hall & Oates and the Temptation’s Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin.

In 1987, UTFO released their most popular selling album, Lethal. The title song featured the rock group Anthrax and, later that year, became the number one rap album in the United States.

 

How Sick Was Kangol Kid?

Kangol Kid was sick when he died on 18th December 2021. However, according to Revolt, he revealed that he was diagnosed with stage 4 Colon cancer in February.

He said that he had to undergo surgery. In October, he was hospitalized for cancer-related complications. Sources revealed that he was recovering at the hospital after the surgery.

 

However, he had suddenly passed away. Many tributes have flooded the internet for the artist. People are sending prayers for his family in this difficult time these days.

It is disheartening to know that he lost the fight after fighting with the disease for so long and left all of his loved ones behind. Nevertheless, his impact on people’s lives will remain alive in many hearts.

On the Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam with Full Force in 1985, he penned and composed “Private Property.” He later managed and produced the rap act Whistle later that year.

He is a songwriter, producer, composer, singer, and talent manager. He is the President of Kangol’s Kreations, Inc., a music production company, and the CEO of Kreative Media Group, a public relations organization.

In addition, he was the first rapper to be recognized by the American Cancer Society in 2012.

As per Kangol Kid’s health update, he was recovering from surgery in the hospital. However, it deteriorated, causing his death.

 

His fans and family were devastated to learn about his health condition. They also set up a GoFundMe page to afford his medical bills. They had managed to collect $22.7 thousand as of today.

He had been updating his followers about his health condition. He announced his diagnosis to them and the time when he was hospitalized for the surgery.

The emcee had shown strength and patience all this time. He fought with it till the end.

Kangol kid has suddenly passed away after struggling with colon cancer. Kangol, real name, Shaun Shiller Fequiere, was born to Haitian parents in Brooklyn, New York. Growing up, Fequiere was ashamed of his Haitian origins.

Because of the many Kangol hats he has and wears, he earned the nickname The Kangol Kid from neighborhood acquaintances in the early 1980s. Kangol Headwear, Inc. is also his official sponsor. At 17, he signed his first record label agreement without legal representation.
