The Brutal Murder of Steven Miller

On July 30, 2016, Connolly, along with Chesley Lucas and Calvin Kenny, forced their way into Miller’s home with the intention of stealing drugs. They dragged Miller out of his bedroom and assaulted him, leaving with him after one of the men poured gasoline around the living room and set it alight. Miller, 25, died of blood loss due to a number of injuries, most significantly a stab wound to the chest.

Connolly’s Criminal History and Sentencing

Connolly, who was originally charged with first-degree murder, pleaded guilty to manslaughter, robbery and forcible confinement in 2018. At the time of his sentencing, the 37-year-old had a lengthy criminal record, with 172 prior convictions. Justice Donald Burrage noted that Connolly deserved a sentence greater than his co-accused due to his age and criminal history.

Connolly was sentenced to a total of more than 20 years in prison, but Justice Burrage ran two of the sentences together, noting the offences were part of the same criminal adventure, and eventually landing on 10 years and six months. With time served in custody since 2016, Connolly has just under four years left to serve on his sentence.

The Fate of Connolly’s Co-Accused

Lucas and Kenny, who also pleaded guilty to manslaughter, arson, robbery and forcible confinement in 2017, were both sentenced to 12.5 years in prison. Kenny was later killed in a New Brunswick prison, while Lucas’s appeal was eventually rejected.
