According to a statement from the New Brunswick Heart Centre’s staff, Dr. Sohrab Lutchmedial spent more than 20 years to the New Brunswick Heart Centre and the care of heart disease patients.
“We report the sudden and unexpected passing of a colleague, friend, father, spouse, and inspiring spirit with tremendous regret,” the statement reads.
According to Jean-François Légaré, the chief of cardiac surgery at the New Brunswick Heart Centre, Lutchmedial died in his sleep at his Saint John home on Monday. He was 52 years old at the time.

The news of Lutchmedial’s death stunned Légaré’s family, friends, and colleagues.
“It came out of nowhere for all of us. In an interview, Légaré stated, “He was truly on call yesterday morning.”
“I believe we’re all having a hard time just realizing the magnitude of the loss… We talked with him over the weekend about ideas and things we were going to do for the heart center in the next weeks and months.
“That’s the type of guy he was.” He was always one step ahead of the game.”
Lutchmedial was a part of the first MitraClip procedure in Atlantic Canada, a minimally invasive repair method that allows patients who are too sick to have open heart surgery fresh hope.
The New Brunswick Medical Society president, Dr. Mark MacMillan, stated in a statement that he was “very grieved” to learn of Lutchmedial’s tragic death.
Dr. Lutchmedial was a respected member of the medical community in Saint John and throughout the province, according to MacMillan. “We extend our heartfelt sympathies to his family, friends, coworkers, and patients.”

Lutchmedial received his biology degree from Queen’s University and his medical degree from McGill University in 1993, according to the cardiac centre’s website.
Légaré’s studies at McGill coincided with those of Lutchmedial, who was already well-known.
“He was more than a doctor,” Légaré explained. “He was a talented artist. He was a performer in the music industry. In the province, he took involved in filmmaking. For his children, he was a hockey coach. He was involved in the community. He was a voracious reader and researcher.”
Even when a man who was itching for a fight bumped into him one night at the pub, he stated Lutchmedial was nice and sympathetic.
Lutchmedial was able to defuse the situation and calm the man down with only a few words.
“This is the type of guy who had a very, very, very nice soul and was able to bring people together rather than be competitive,” Légaré added.

“This is the kind of power he wielded over the heart center. And I believe he fostered a culture within our company that pulls us all closer together and encourages us to collaborate.”
Lutchmedial was the program director for interventional cardiology at the hospital. He was the Atlantic representative for the Canadian Association of Interventional Cardiologists and served on the New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Board.
Lutchmedial had made New Brunswick his home, according to Légaré, and had raised three children here. He’d just returned from a weekend visit to his daughter at university in Ontario.
Légaré and his colleagues are considering a lectureship or sponsoring someone in medicine or nursing as a method to immortalize his legacy, according to him.
