Born on September 23, 1971, in Indianapolis, Montross was a standout basketball player at Lawrence North High School, earning the title of McDonald’s All-American in 1990.
His collegiate journey led him to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he played for four years under the guidance of coach Dean Smith. Montross played a pivotal role in the 1993 national championship team’s victory over Michigan in the final. He achieved recognition as a two-time All-American and an Academic All-American.
In the 1994 NBA draft, Montross was selected by the Boston Celtics as the ninth overall pick. Over eight seasons in the league, he played for six different teams, including the Dallas Mavericks, New Jersey Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, Detroit Pistons, and Toronto Raptors. Montross concluded his NBA career in 2002, retiring with career averages of 4.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.
