The man, who is slated to become the next archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco was detained on suspicion of drunken driving in San Diego on Saturday while driving his elderly mother home after dinner with friends.
Officer Mark McCullough said Oakland Diocese Bishop Salvatore Cordileone was driving along the southern boundary of San Diego State University when he came across a sobriety checkpoint.

Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone was pleasant but seemed inebriated when he was apprehended at 12:26 a.m., according to McCullough.
After posting a $2500 bond, the bishop was released from custody shortly before noon. On Oct. 9, he will be arraigned on the misdemeanor offense.
“I was discovered to be over the California legal blood alcohol limit,” Cordileone said in a statement released Monday. “I sincerely repent for my erroneous judgment and the embarrassment I have brought upon the Church and myself,” the bishop added.
