In a statement released in March 2014, his family said: “Michael remains in critical condition. For all of us, it is quite difficult to understand how Michael, who had previously triumphed over many trying circumstances, should have suffered such severe harm in such an unimportant circumstance.”

He was said to be at the French hospital in Grenoble. Later, he was relocated to a hospital in Lausanne, Switzerland, before being transferred in September 2014 to his family’s farm near Lake Geneva to finish his treatment there.

On December 29, 2013, Schumacher and his son Mick, who was 14 at the time, crashed horribly while skiing in the French Alps near Méribel.

Even though he wore a ski helmet, he fell and struck his head on a rock as he crossed an off-piste section.

The world champion was flown to a hospital in Grenoble after doctors determined that he would have most likely died without the safety equipment.

He underwent two operations from doctors to drain blood from his head and lower the pressure.
