Roberta Flack, the celebrated Grammy-winning singer famous for her timeless hits like “Killing Me Softly With His Song” and “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” has died at the age of 88.
Born on February 10, 1937, in Black Mountain, North Carolina, Flack began her musical journey at a young age, earning a scholarship to Howard University at just 15 to study classical music. However, she shifted her focus to singing after encouragement from her teachers, ultimately becoming one of the most revered vocalists of the 1970s.

Flack’s career was filled with remarkable achievements, including being the first artist to win the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in consecutive years. Her performance of “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” won in 1973, followed by “Killing Me Softly With His Song” in 1974. These milestones solidified her position as a prominent figure in the “quiet storm” genre of R&B, known for its smooth and soulful sound.

Beyond her musical success, Flack was also a passionate educator. She taught music and English in North Carolina and Washington, D.C., before her music career took off. Flack continued to perform and create music throughout her life, despite facing health challenges, including a stroke and a diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2022, which ultimately led to her retirement from performing.
Flack’s legacy goes beyond her own music; she opened doors for future generations of artists by challenging racial stereotypes in the music industry and advocating for artists’ rights. Her impact is evident in the neo-soul movement, and her contributions to the “quiet storm” genre remain unmatched.
