Lizzo, the Grammy-winning pop icon, recently shared her experiences with weight loss, revealing that while she did try the popular medication Ozempic, her true success came from making lifestyle changes instead.
This frank admission came several months after she had previously denied using any weight loss drugs, offering more insight into her transformation.
Lizzo Opens Up About Ozempic
During an episode of Trisha Paytas’ podcast, Just Trish, aired on June 19, Lizzo talked about how she had experimented with Ozempic and other GLP-1 medications, which are usually prescribed for type 2 diabetes but have also gained traction for their appetite-suppressing effects. She mentioned,
“I’ve tried everything. It’s all about the science for me—calories in versus calories out. Ozempic works because it helps you eat less food. It makes you feel full. If you can achieve that by yourself, it’s the same thing.”
Ultimately, despite her brief trial with the drug, she decided it wasn’t essential for meeting her weight loss objectives.
What Really Helped Lizzo?
Lizzo credited her weight loss success to a mix of calorie counting, exercising, and major changes in her diet. One significant change was stepping away from a vegan diet she had followed for nearly ten years.
She explained that during her time as a vegan, she consumed a lot of processed meat substitutes, bread, and rice, often taking in between 3,000 to 5,000 calories a day just to feel satisfied.
Transitioning to a diet that included whole foods like beef, chicken, and fish allowed her to feel full without the need to overeat. She noted,
“I was actually full and not just expanding my stomach with a lot of fake stuff that wasn’t truly filling me up.”
Inspired by what she learned from the Japanese diet, which she considers one of the healthiest and most compatible with her body, she made these dietary adjustments.
A Shift in Mindset and Lifestyle
Beyond dietary changes, Lizzo stressed the importance of a mental and emotional shift in her health journey. She admitted that she used to turn to food, drinking, and other distractions, but chose to stop those habits to focus on her own well-being.
This change in mindset was vital to her weight loss. She also shared that her view on body positivity has transformed into body neutrality, acknowledging that feelings about one’s body can change from day to day.
Lizzo’s Words of Caution on Weight Loss
While Lizzo has been open about her journey, she urged others to be cautious about imitating her methods without taking their own unique bodies into account. She expressed,
“I don’t want anyone to try my approach if it doesn’t work for them. Everyone’s body is different.”
This highlights how personal and individualized the journey to weight loss and health can be.
