Dharwad: Hindustani vocalist Professor Rajshekhar Mansur died in a private hospital in Bengaluru on Sunday. He was 80 and is survived by his wife and three daughters.
The son of Hindustani vocalist Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur, Rajshekhar was a professor of English at Karnatak University in Dharwad. Having trained under his father, Rajshekhar was a top vocalist for All India Radio. He performed in many music festivals throughout the country.
The Karnataka government recognised his contribution to music by awarding him the Rajyotsava Award in 1997.
He was nominated as the chairman of Karnataka Sangeet Nrutya Akademi from 2005 to 2008. He was also awarded the Karnataka Kalashri Gaurav in 2009. He also received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Ustad Bismillah Khan and Pandit Sanna Bharamanna Smarak Rashtriya Puraskar by the Tansen Academy of Music, Chennai. His music has been preserved in the archives of Indira Gandhi Manav Sangrahalaya in Bhopal.
