Dempsey was not involved in an accident; her family was involved in a car accident 30 years earlier, and the individuals who arrived to assist her lacked the necessary expertise to save her loved one.
Her kindness and hardworking demeanor at St John earned her the nickname “Aunty Val” among the locals.
Val is always willing to lead or assist with volunteer introduction and first aid training for the community, in addition to giving first aid at community events and activities on a regular basis.
She also helps the elderly and volunteers with NightCrew to keep the CBD safe for young people. Despite a degenerative muscular illness that makes effort difficult, she continues to volunteer.

She expressed her desire to motivate a new generation to learn first aid so that they can help to save lives.

She said, “Saving lives is the greatest gift we can give to our country and humanity.”
Dempsey volunteered over 600 hours in 2021 alone, leading first aid training, assisting at local events and activities, and working with the Covid-19 response team.
Following a summer blaze in 2020, Dempsey coordinated the deployment of teams to first aid stations and led a 40-person volunteer team that assisted fire-affected areas.
Throughout the pandemic, the long-time volunteer made it a point to contact each St John volunteer individually to check on their well-being. She claimed that her work was for the sake of faith and humanity.
