A series of coordinated train heists in the Mojave Desert regions of California and Arizona has led to the theft of over $2 million worth of Nike sneakers.
The most significant incident took place on January 13, 2025, in Perrin, Arizona, where thieves made off with nearly 2,000 pairs of unreleased Nigel Sylvester x Air Jordan 4 “Brick by Brick” sneakers, valued at over $440,000. These sneakers were scheduled for release on March 14, 2025, with a retail price of $225 per pair.

The thieves’ approach involves cutting the air brake hose on BNSF freight trains, causing them to stop suddenly.
Once the trains are halted, the thieves quickly unload the valuable merchandise, often aided by follow vehicles that track the train’s movements. The stolen items are then transported to California for resale on online platforms like Amazon and eBay.
Law enforcement has made several arrests related to these heists. For example, eleven individuals were charged with possessing or receiving stolen goods after the January 13 incident. Despite these arrests, the scale of the thefts continues to present significant challenges for both Nike and the rail industry.
The increase in train robberies raises broader concerns about cargo safety throughout the U.S. rail system. In 2023, there was a 40% rise in railroad cargo thefts, leading to losses exceeding $100 million for major rail companies.
