In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Johnny Depp opened up about the intense backlash he faced following his highly publicized defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard.
The 61-year-old actor, who recently received a lifetime achievement award at the Rome Film Festival, shared his candid thoughts on the ordeal.
“I can sit here this very second and think about all the hit pieces, and how everybody was against me, and yeah yeah yeah he is off the map, endless stuff. I can remember it all,”
Depp revealed, recalling the tumultuous period leading up to the trial.
During the six-year hiatus preceding the trial, Depp claimed he had been effectively blacklisted in Hollywood due to Heard’s allegations of abuse. However, the tide turned dramatically when a seven-member jury in Fairfax, Virginia unanimously ruled in Depp’s favor, finding Heard guilty of defamation.
Reflecting on the experience, Depp stated,
“Went through it all. Some of it was not the most beautiful time, some of it was hilarious. Some of it was mad.”
He added,
“The thing is, it simply just was, and it simply just is. So, for me, it happened. I learned, man. Everything that we experience, whether you’re given a snow cone or walking your dog, you learn something somewhere along the way.”
Johnny Depp expressed that he harbors no ill feelings towards anyone involved in the trial.
“I don’t have this great reserve of hatred, because hatred requires caring. Why carry that baggage?”
he explained.
The actor’s comments come as he promotes his latest film, Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness, at the Rome Film Festival. Depp’s appearance at the festival marked a significant moment in his career resurgence following the trial victory.
While Depp appears to have moved forward from the ordeal, the aftermath of the defamation case continues to be felt in Hollywood. The trial’s impact on both Depp’s and Heard’s careers remains a topic of discussion among industry insiders and fans alike.
As Depp looks to the future, he seems focused on putting the past behind him.
“So I don’t have any ill feelings toward anyone,” he concluded. “I’m just grateful to be here, to be working, and to be enjoying life.”
