Apart from its futuristic antics and witty criticism on corporate greed, the show is also a compelling murder mystery, as it becomes evident that Nathan was murdered.

Upload Who killed Nathan Reddit: The Facts Behind Nathan’s Death Have Been Cloaked in Mystery
The facts behind Nathan’s death have been cloaked in mystery from the beginning, but any probe into the incident is immediately derailed by other mischief. People have been remarking on how bizarre it is that Nathan gets killed in a self-driven vehicle accident since season one, which is an extremely unusual event. This is the first indication that the protagonist’s death was the result of foul play.
After being seen briefly entering Nathan’s automobile just before the collision, Ingrid becomes the first suspect. When Nathan’s wealthy (and deceased) Lakeview neighbour David Choak points out that the former was probably murdered because he was trying to figure out a way to make Uploads free, thereby hurting a $600 billion a year company, things start to seem a lot more fishy. Slowly, the puzzle pieces start to fall into place, and it appears that corporate greed is to blame for the show’s key murder.
Nathan realises he was killed after selling his code to Oliver Kannerman, Ingrid’s wealthy father, before the end of season one. Ingrid’s own role in the crime is easily dismissed, which is understandable given the heinous crimes she routinely does, which is what gives her character so much laughter. As Season 2 progresses, a larger conspiracy emerges, with David Choak appearing to be the mastermind. Things become increasingly clearer when a peek inside Choak’s mind (courtesy of Mindfrisk) reveals him conversing with the assassin ordered to kill Nora.
Meet Oliver Kannerman and David Choak
As a result, it appears that Oliver Kannerman and David Choak, two wealthy tycoons with interests in the afterlife sector, are behind Nathan’s murder. Nathan says that Kannerman owes him money (for a hidden deal utilising Nathan’s free Upload code), implying that Ingrid’s wealthy father has her lover murdered to hide the transaction.
Choak’s motivations appear to be much more nefarious, as the obscenely wealthy conservative businessman appears to be exploiting Nathan’s code to sway American elections (via a company called Freeyond). When Nathan initially meets Choak in season 1, the latter claims to have affected an entire generation of American politics, the show cleverly sprinkles a hint about this. Despite the fact that he is deceased, it appears that he is still “influencing” politics.
As a result, there are some massive forces at work in the aftermath of Nathan’s murder. It’s orchestrated by Choak, who aims to utilise Nathan’s code to disenfranchise the poor, and propelled by Kannerman, a stakeholder in the afterlife industry that our hero threatens with his new code. In comparison to these two men, Ingrid’s lack of guilt for her role in her boyfriend’s murder appears to be rather justifiable!
Who Killed Nathan? Every Candidate Explained
The first season of Amazon’s Upload left viewers with a cliffhanger and a big question: who killed Nathan Brown? The series didn’t solve the mystery right away, instead getting everything ready for a second season, but it did leave a couple of candidates, each with strong reasons to go after Nathan – and here’s what you need to know about them. With the current coronavirus emergency, many film and TV productions were put on hold, and streaming platforms are working harder than ever as they are seeing a bigger flow of activity. Luckily, all of them have content ready to be released while people are encouraged to stay home.
On Amazon’s side, the platform recently released Upload, a sci-fi comedy satire from Greg Daniels (Parks & Recreation). Set in a near future where technology controls everything, including the afterlife, Upload follows Nathan Brown (Robbie Amell), a young man who after a car accident is pushed by his girlfriend, Ingrid (Allegra Edwards), to “upload” his consciousness so he can “live” forever and they can continue to be together. Once uploaded to Horizen’s Lakeview, he meets Nora (Andy Allo), a customer service rep who serves as an “angel” to the uploads under her watch, guiding them through their new “life”. Nathan is one of her uploads, and they quickly develop a special bond – and discover some mysteries and strange things surrounding his memories, life, and death.
Oliver Kannerman
Oliver Kannerman is Ingrid’s dad and Nathan’s father-in-law. Oliver is a rich and powerful man working for Horizen, which is why he and his family have unlimited data, and why Ingrid can afford having Nathan living in Lakeview. After Nathan broke-up with Ingrid, she confronted her dad and told him she changed the settings in Nathan’s car to protect the driver, though that didn’t work as he still crashed. When Nathan’s memories were fully restored, Nora (and viewers) learned that, after Jamie and Nathan refused to sell their project to Horizen over fear of losing control of it, Oliver offered Nathan a big amount of money for the code – and he accepted, as he wanted the money for his family.
Oliver later messed with Nathan’s car to provoke the accident, though as Ingrid changed the settings, it’s unclear if he’s still responsible for the crash or if it was someone else’s doing. Oliver had strong reasons to kill Nathan, as he needed to cover his tracks after getting the code so they could launch Freeyond – Nathan and Jamie’s project, Beyond. Of course, making Ingrid convince Nathan to upload under their data plan was a way to keep him under control and under their watch, even after his death.
Jamie
Jamie is Nathan’s best friend and business partner, with whom he was working on the Beyond project. Together they tried to sell their project to big companies, but they (understandably) had some rules – problem was, Nathan didn’t fully agree with Jamie on them. Jamie didn’t want to lose control of the project, which is why he didn’t want to sell to Horizen. As mentioned above, Nathan sold the code behind his back, betraying Jamie, who didn’t even attend his funeral – which could have been somewhat understandable had he not spent Thanksgiving dinner with Nathan on the night of the car crash. This showed that they were on good terms by the time of his death, which makes it even weirder that he didn’t attend the funeral.
Though Jamie later told Nathan he didn’t kill him, he can’t be fully trusted, and he could have been lying. Jamie’s motives could have not only been related to Beyond but also to Ingrid, as it was revealed he slept with her and pretended to not like her in front of Nathan.
Other Upload Companies
The project Beyond was a threat to big companies in the “upload” business, so in that sense, Nathan and Jamie surely earned some enemies. Of course, Horizen is the prime suspect, but Nathan’s “accident” could have been planned by another company as well – more so when taking into account that there was an attack to Horizen’s database, most likely linked to the erasure of Nathan’s memories and thus his death. This could be a company interested in Beyond and which obviously wasn’t attractive enough for Nathan and Jamie to sell the project to, and also one of Horizen’s competitors, which would benefit from messing with their database.
Though Upload hasn’t been renewed for a second season yet, it left a lot of questions waiting to be answered in future episodes, and the mystery of Nathan’s death is number one on the list – and once that one is solved, many others can find an answer, too.
